I get an Uncaught exception: Layout requested during layout… when I try to start Berry Pix

You likely have an older version of Berry Pix; please make sure to download the latest Berry Pix version.

I get an Exception in Berry Pix Add-in [87] in the Berry Pix Desktop Loader when I try to add Pictures though the BlackBerry Desktop Manager v4.3 or later

The Berry Pix Desktop Loader add-in that shipped with Berry Pix v2.0 is not compatible with BlackBerry Desktop Manager v4.3 or later. As a work-around please download an updated add-in and extract the contents to your Berry Pix installation directory. In most cases you will need to extract the contents of this zip into “C:\Program Files\Berry Pix”. Please restart your BlackBerry Desktop Manager to complete the upgrade.

If your BlackBerry has OS v4.2 or later, we recommend using the Roxio Media Manager to add pictures to your BlackBerry and then use the Berry Pix v2.1 beta’s Import pictures feature to catalog your newly added pictures. Note that in order to use the import feature in Berry Pix v2.1 beta, your handheld should not be in Storage Mode. The easiest way to ensure this is to disconnect your USB cable from your BlackBerry before performing the import.

Berry Pix is crashing with Java Exception: finishLoading() called on… messages. How do I resolve this?

This is a compatibility problem with Berry Pix v2.0 and the the BlackBerry Handheld OS v4.2. We now have a beta version 2.1 of Berry Pix which fixes these incompatibilities and adds superior support for features such as the MicroSD card and integration with the built-in camera.

I cannot seem to enable the Berry Pix Desktop Loader add-in for the BlackBerry Desktop Manager in Windows Vista. How do I resolve this?

This is a known compatibility problem of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager when running on Windows Vista. To enable the Berry Pix Desktop Loader using Windows Vista, open the Add-in Module Configuration Dialog as per the Berry Pix getting started guide. The problem is that in Windows Vista the enable/disable checkbox will not be visible, but it will still be there. The work around is to click slightly to the left of the Berry Pix Desktop Loader text as illustrated in the picture below and then click on the OK button and continue with the instructions in the Berry Pix getting started guide.

Enable/Disable checkbox for Configure Add-in Modules missing in Windows Vista.

Screensaver feature no longer works. However, manually starting the slideshow does work. How do I fix the screensaver?

This is a known bug on some BlackBerry models with certain OS versions. This problem can be solved by removing and reinserting the BlackBerry’s battery.

How do I configure my BlackBerry® Desktop Manager to use the Berry Pix v2.0 Desktop Loader?

  1. Start up BlackBerry Desktop Manager
  2. Connect BlackBerry Handheld to Desktop via USB, serial, or bluetooth.
  3. Wait for BlackBerry Desktop Manager to detect BlackBerry Handheld. This may take a little time and when complete your BlackBerry Desktop Manager’s status bar should indicate your Handheld is connected.
  4. Launch the BlackBerry Desktop Manager’s Intellisync application. You should now see a new window entitled “Intellisync”.
  5. Make sure that the “Execute Add-in actions” checkbox is checked.
  6. Locate and click on the “Configure Add-ins…” button. You should now see a Dialog entitled “Add-in Module Configuration”.
  7. While in the Add-in Module Configuration Dialog, you should see a list of available add-in modules for your BlackBerry Desktop Manager. Locate the “Berry Pix Desktop Loader” add-in module and make sure that its checkbox is checked. Once enabled, click on the “OK” button to save the settings.

This completes the neccessary one-time configuration of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Berry Pix. You may now launch the Berry Pix Desktop Loader via the “Synchronize now” button on the Intellisync window of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

During the Berry Pix install setup on my Desktop, my BlackBerry® Application loader says "No system software was found for your device" or "No system software found"

This is not a Berry Pix problem; this error is usually caused by your BlackBerry Desktop Manager being too old. We recommend first trying upgrading your BlackBerry Desktop Manager to the latest version (v4.5) which can be found on the blackberry.com download page.

If upgrading your BlackBerry Desktop Manager does not resolve this error, please see RIM Knowledge Base article KB-02247 and after following the instructions there, try the Berry Pix Desktop installer again.

We do have a work-around for this error if you have data service on your BlackBerry Wireless Handheld. Just do the following:

  1. Run the Berry Pix Desktop installer and de-select the Handheld Component.
  2. Using your BlackBerry’s built-in Internet Browser visit http://www.colabnet.com/berrypix/ and follow the onscreen instructions to install Berry Pix on your Handheld.
  3. Follow the one-time configuration your BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Berry Pix.

Why do I get an ObjectGroupReadOnlyException error when trying to add pictures to Berry Pix via email?

Usually, this error indicates that the picture attachment did not get delivered properly. The most common reason for this is failure to prepend x-rimdevice to the attachment filename before sending it via email.

After I enter my registration activation code in Berry Pix, the screen saver no longer works

This is a known bug on some BlackBerry models with certain OS versions. This problem can be solved by removing and reinserting the BlackBerry’s battery.

Using Berry Pix

How do I set a Berry Pix picture as wallpaper?

In order to use this feature of Berry Pix, your BlackBerry Handheld OS must have v4.1 or later. To use a Berry Pix image as wallpaper, do the following:

  1. Open Berry Pix from the main screen of your Handheld.
  2. Locate the picture you want to set as wallpaper.
  3. Click on the trackwheel and select "Preview Picture" from the menu.
  4. On the Preview Picture screen, click on the trackwheel again, and choose "Save Image" from the menu.
  5. You should now see a Save Image dialog with a checkbox for "Set As Home Screen Image"
  6. Check the "Set As Home Screen Image" and click on the “Save” button.

How do I disable the Screensaver in Berry Pix?

To disable the screensaver in Berry Pix follow these steps:

  1. Open Berry Pix from the main screen of your Handheld
  2. Click on the trackwheel and choose "Settings" from the menu.
  3. On the Berry Pix "Settings" Screen, navigate to the Standby Timeout Field and change the value to Never.
  4. Close the settings window and the changes will be instantly applied

How can I open a picture in email with Berry Pix instead of the default attachment viewer?

Normally, picture attachments cannot be opened by third-party applications like Berry Pix v2.0 because the default attachment viewer prevents this from happening. To get around this, change the filename extension of the attachment to .bpx

For example, the attachment filename x-rimdeviceflowers.jpg would be renamed to x-rimdeviceflowers.bpx

The renamed “bpx file” can now be attached to an email and sent successfuly to your BlackBerry and opened by Berry Pix. Note that attachments over 60KB in size will not be delivered to your BlackBerry. This is not a limitation of Berry Pix.

Note that in Windows®, filename extensions are usually hidden by default and this will prevent filename extensions from being changed. To disable this behavior in Windows, do the following: From the Start menu, click on “My Computer”, next choose the “Folder Options” from the Tools menu. Under Folder Options, open the “View” tab. In the Folder Options View tab, locate the “Hide extensions for known file types” checkbox and uncheck it. Then click the OK button to save the changes.

How do I start the Berry Pix Desktop Loader?

The Berry Pix Desktop Loader is launched through the BlackBerry Desktop Manger by clicking on the “Synchronize now” button in the BlackBerry Desktop Manager’s Intellisync® window. In order to take advantage of this feature, a one-time configuration of your BlackBerry Desktop Manager must be completed.
